until作介词或连词，意为“到……时候为止”、“到……时候才”或“在……时候以前不”。

什么情况下表达什么意思，关键要看（主）句中的谓语动词是短暂性动词还是延续性动词。

until和till意思相同. till 历史更悠久，但一般为非正式用语，美国英语里还常常拼作"’til"。

一、用于肯定句中，“到、、、为止”，表示动作一直持续到所说时间为止。所以主句的动词必须是延续性动词。如:

i waited until/ till 6 o’clock and then i went home.

我等到6点钟，然后就回家了。

i will wait until/ till i hear from you. 我会一直等到你写信来。

i'll be here until/ till christmas. 我会在这呆到圣诞节。

the kids stayed awake until/ till midnight. 孩子们一直玩到午夜。

the neighbours play music from morning until/ till/to night.

（此句还可以用to）我的邻居从早到晚放音乐。

up until now, we have thought of the internet as a place to store information, and we have depended upon search engines to help us find it.

until从句中，如果要表示将来的动作或状态，用一般现在时代替,不能用将来时。如:

they will study at the school until their parents come to take them home.

他们会在学校里学习到父母来接他们回家。

二、until用于否定句中，“直到、、、才”，表示动作从until表示的时间才开始，主句动词延续性、非延续性均可。

i'm not leaving till you apologise. 你道歉后我才会离开。（你不道歉我不走了。）

you’re not watching tv until you finish (have finished) your dinner.

吃好晚饭后你们才能电视。

i didn’t know she was french until she spoke.

直到她开口说话我才知道她是法国人。

you must not leave the room until i let you go.

我让你走你才能走。

i’m busy until 5 o’clock. / i’ll not be free until 5 o’clock.

我要忙到五点。/我五点后才有空。

don't/never put off until tomorrow what you can do today. 今日事，今日毕。

否定句中until常常可以用before互换。

we won’t be seeing each other until / before christmas.我们要到圣诞节才能见面。

如果（主）句中的谓语动词是延续性动词，那么肯定式或否定式所表达的意思有所不同。　　

i watched tv until she came back. 我看电视一直看到她回来。

三、not until 状语在句首，（主）句子要用倒装句，如：

not until nine o'clock yesterday evening did we finish the work.

直到昨晚九点，我们才完成这项工作。

not until the sun had smiled lovingly upon them would they awake.

直到阳光慈爱地照在他们身上，他们才会醒来。

not until 状语被强调，表达如下：

it was not until mr. keith taught me that i had a clear idea of mathematics.

直到keith先生教我，我才对数学有清晰的概念。
